Director of Human Resources – Michelman & Robinson Law Firm—Los Angeles, CA

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for leading and directing the overall Human Resources activity of the firm; including recruiting and staffing, compliance, employee relations, coaching and performance management, benefit administration, and workplace safety.  This person will also provide leadership in creating a professional environment in each office that is consistent with our core values and commitment to making our firm the best place to work – above all else.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage overall performance, direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources department staff.
    • Lead departmental projects and oversee operations, regularly following up on work results and overseeing the administration of department functions.
    • Communicate topics of importance to team and solicit input and feedback on systems, improvements and job satisfaction via individual conversations and regularly scheduled team meetings. This includes, but is not limited to weekly 1-to-1 meetings with each direct report and at least bi-weekly team meetings to identify and review strategic objectives and action items, including a shared understanding of and alignment with the firm’s overall vision, core values, and purpose.
    • Evaluate and manage performance, conduct mid-year and annual reviews, and provide necessary coaching and training to Human Resources staff.
    • Develop and implement short and long-term goals and objectives for team.
    • Determine optimal staffing requirements and utilization of department staff.

 

  • Recruit, develop and retain qualified attorneys and staff.
    • Utilize proven sourcing strategies to identify talent needs and find potential candidates to fill those needs, including but not limited to the use of outside agencies, LinkedIn, and other networking platforms and job boards.
    • Provide HR support and resources to recruit, interview and recommend applicants to fill open positions; including screening applicants and conducting all necessary background and reference checks.
    • Monitor and track attorney and staff new hire orientation and training.
    • Interface with hiring managers, supervisors and department heads regarding recruiting, hiring decisions, compensation, new hire orientation, performance reviews, employee concerns, performance issues, and/or disciplinary actions.
    • Ascertain needs for staff training, firm-wide communication, and possible culture change; provide analysis and recommendations to appropriate managers, supervisors and department heads as needed.
    • Provide in-house seminars, quarterly staff meetings and other events as needed to ensure there is regular communication and a common understanding on the overall direction, progress and changes with the firm’s five-year plan, including but not limited to the analysis and dissemination of firm-wide survey results, topics of interest, and any new policies and/or procedures.

 

  • Oversee and manage the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Human Resources department.
    • Create department budget and manage allocation of department personnel and resources
    • Remain current with the most recent human resources regulations and developments, including any state and federal legal issues relative to human resources.
    • Update and maintain the firm’s Employee Handbook.
    • Interface regularly with staff and attorneys firm-wide to ensure human resources, skills, and training programs are aligned with business needs.
    • Attend office and firm-wide management and/or administrative meetings, as needed
    • Administer employee classification assessments and development of job descriptions.
    • Oversee and administer the firm’s health and safety program, including the firm’s COVID-19 Prevention Plan (CPP).
    • Review, administer and manage the firm’s health benefits program and 401(k) plan.
    • Assist in legal activities relating to human resources issues, investigations and employee grievances.
    • Represent the firm in the professional community.

 

  • Client Service Excellence
    • Consistently promote and model courteous internal and external client service in a prompt and efficient manner.
    • Maintain positive relationships with attorneys and staff, including external clients and outside vendors, through professional honest interaction.
    • Respond to attorney and staff requests quickly and professionally with recognition that the request serves an internal client or firm need.

    • Safeguard and keep any information, observations, or viewpoints regarding firm and client business matters confidential.

 

  • Safety Practices
    • Adhere to the firm’s general safety practices and any unique safety practices for the department and building.

    • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years HR experience
  • Course work in HR or certification as CA-PHR or CA-SPHR is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with  Payroll / HRIS systems, Paycom preferred
  • BA or BS in related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in written and verbal form
  • Superior knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources administration, including timekeeping and wage and hour compliance
  • Ability to effectively develop long-term plans and successfully execute them on-time and within budget
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with senior executives, managers, staff and employees
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Able to travel to and from various offices and event locations

 

Working Conditions and Travel Requirements:

This role offers an optional hybrid 3/2 work week–3 days in office, 2 days remote.  This position will work in a professional office environment and will be required to sit for prolonged periods of time using a computer and telephone.   At least quarterly travel to New York, Orange County, and other office locations as needed to effectively carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, including the cultivation and maintenance of key relationships with direct reports, Office Managers, department heads and senior management.
